Austrian next layer future-proofs network with Smartoptics open line system

Austrian ISP and CSP, next layer, enhances its capacity and future-proof its network for 400G with Smartoptics’ DCP-M40. The open line system works like a coherent solution minus the complexity and high-entry level costs.

For many years next layer has used Smartoptics’ certified transceivers on its fiber channel connections. At the end of 2018, they decided to expand to 100G to increase capacity and achieve its aim of remaining the best-connected IP network among Austrian ISPs. The goal was to do this without increasing complexity.

The service provider selected the Smartoptics open line system, DCP-M40, an easy-to-use solution that works purely on the optical layer.

“We always try to avoid adding complexity because the more complex the system the more trouble it can introduce. Finding a simple option that just does what it says it does and is as effective as the Smartoptics solution is the ideal answer from our point of view,” comments Rene Avi, CTO at next layer.

Today, next layer and their clients enjoy the look and feel of a fiber per transceiver, but from a single fiber multiplied into 40 wavelengths, at a price point that makes sense.

“Most solutions to enhance capacity have a high-entry level investment. The Smartoptics open line solution is completely scalable, you can pay as you grow, making it a smart investment,” remarks Georg Chytil, CEO at next layer.

With all eyes on the 400G roll out in 2020, next layer is preparing to take advantage of the new bandwidth. Smartoptics’ open line system supports the increased capacity and upgrading the system is expected to be as easy as replacing existing transceivers with ones that support the new standard.

“We want to make it simple for our customers to stay abreast of the latest technology advancements and we are confident that our open line system can easily be upgraded to provide 400G services, prolonging the lifetime and increasing the value of the investment,” says Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO at Smartoptics
